BEYOND THE BAY OVERNIGHT EVENT
Weather for the start of tomorrow’s Beyond The Bay Overnight Event looks great with 10-15 knot southerlies currently being forecast.
Early Sunday morning, the winds become very light and variable which will make for some very interesting navigation choices indeed.
The allure of doing lots of short legs in the south Bay to get those extra mark rounding points might be seductive but keep in mind that you can only motor for maximum of two hours and you must finish between 0900 and 1100 Sunday morning else all is wasted! So maybe getting into the northern areas of the Bay before the winds lighten might well be a prudent move so that you can make that motor dash to the finish if needed!
Maintaining the radio schedules is critical and use the Event Director mobile phone number if necessary (0418 396 605). Sign-on is at noon Saturday when boats will be called in alphabetical order to confirm entry and number of person on-board.Geelong starting boats may well need to phone in. Also keep a keen eye out for shipping on the Bay, and keep clear of ships at all times, particular when crossing shipping channels.
The handicaps for the Event have all been determined and will be on the website later today. Since most of the boats are new to us, the handicapping has not been easy so be spare some sympathy for the handicapper!
The weather Sunday afternoon looks good so the trip back to your home ports should be easy and hopefully all boats and crews will stop at Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club for the apres-sailing activities and presentations.
