2014 SUMMER OCEAN RACING

The 2014 Summer ocean racing with start off as usual on Cup Weekend with a repeat of last year’s race to Portland. It was such a success last year with a strong level of participation and a great effort by Portland Yacht Club to really make the fleet very welcome on arrival. It is a qualifying race for the ORCV Christmas races, as well as that other ocean race that starts on Boxing Day somewhere up north! It’s only three months away and will be upon us before you know it so not too early to start thinking about preparing your boat which will include a fresh safety equipment audit of course (Category 2).

Christmas will see the traditional races to Hobart (East and West coast) but this year the shorter Bass Strait race will be to Devonport, hosted by the Mersey Yacht Club on the Mersey River. Tamar Yacht Club has been a great host in recent years and we look forward to returning there in the future but hopefully the change in venue will bring some fresh interest into this important race. It is a great opportunity to experience a Bass Strait crossing without having to go all the way to Hobart so is an excellent step up from our coastal races or even the race to King Island. It is a Category 2 race, so certainly not too early to start thinking about what needs to be done to be ready on time.

2016 Cock of the bay - its a wrap

The 2016 Cock of the Bay race is a wrap, with lots of smiles, experiences to share and friends to catch up with at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron. Forecasts predicted a spinnaker start, alas by the time the race started the Southerly wind had kicked in. By the middle of the race the wind built to 25k, favouring those closer to shore. It was warm and pleasant sailing, despite a little rain and the odd splash. By mark 19 the wind had lightened off and there were several patches of character building 0k. Towards the end of the race for the mid to back of the fleet, the wind built back to 5-10k all [ ... ]

2016 Cock of the bay Weather

On the nose and bumpy later which will test the constitution of a few sailor who had too much Christmas Day It looks like the weak change will have moved through Melbourne on boxing day which will leave the fleet in southerly winds that will increase during the day. Some models are predicting an hour or two of northerly so that will give the navigators some interesting options. I have included the Predictwind 8km resolution winds and as you will see the timing between the models are different.  Mercedes III - Cock of the Bay again? Mercedes III led the Australian team to victory in the 1967 Admiral’s Cup, with a top points performance. She more than fulfilled the expectations of designers Ted Kaufman and Ben Lexcen. In 1989, under new owner Martin Ryan, Mercedes III won the Cock of the Bay on Channel Handicap, a rating system with a strong age allowance which is no longer in use in Australia. The new rating systems are AMS and IRC, introduced well after Mercedes III was designed and therefore giving a distinct advantage to modern yachts designed to these systems. Someone f [ ... ]
