2015 Tassie Trio: Cock of the Bay, Devonport or the Westcoast!

The races to Devonport and Hobart via the West coast are a challenge in their own right and provide an opportunity for a short dash across Bass Strait  or for those with a longer leave pass, destination Hobart!

At the recent ORCV committee meeting there was discussion around the viability of running three 2015 Xmas ocean races.  This was consistent with a request to review the viability from a significant number of ORCV members in the recent member survey. " We looked at competitor entries, and based on there being no entries in the East Coaster six weeks out, decided to consolidate the Melbourne to Hobart races, adopting just the West Coaster this year.  This was a unanimous committee vote.  We wish to seek feedback from members as to which Melbourne to Hobart races we should run in 2016.  We are happy to discuss while in Hobart or before hand so if you have comments or concerns please discuss with one of the flag officers (Neville, Ray, or Martin) or the office directly.  Regards the ORCV Committee.”

Earlybird entry closes on 19/11/2015 so don’t delay.

Turbulence and Ocean Skins were early entries for the duel down the Westcoast and other have followed.Escapade, Extasea, One for the Raod, Spirit of Downunder and Yoko. Halcyon, Bacardi, Biddy Hu 11,Chritine and Tevake II  are off to Devonport. Who else will join them?

ORCV recently approached Yachting Victoria to request a variation in the Special Regulations to permit Satellite phone use in lieu of HF radio.

This request has been granted subject to the following requirements;

  • This is solely for the 2015 Devonport race
  • Any boats carrying a satphone in lieu of HF radio demonstrate speed dialling to AMSA and the ORCV race director’s phone
  • That any boats using a satphone also have afully set-up VHF DSC radio (MMSI number, GPS enabled etc.)
  • That the ORCV ensure a boat using a satphone be able to receive appropriate weather warnings

The ORCV welcome this initiative as they are aware of the major cost barrier of HF radio installation to boat owners who are new to ocean sailing.

Robert Green's yacht Dream won the Melbourne to Devonport Race in style, crossing the finishing line at 20:07:40 Friday night after what was a challenging and sometimes sensational race across Bass Strait. “Really pleased to be here. It was a very frustrating race with so many pockets of calm and we were so disappointed to hit 0.05 knots within 4nm of the finish line. ORCV Melbourne to Devonport Race past half way

Following a colourful spinnaker start from Portsea the fleet is now nearly half way across Bass Strait on their way to Devonport. Overnight, northerly winds kept the 10 strong fleet heading southeast and near the rhumb line for the 195 mile race that finishes at the Mersey River. Should these conditions prevail as expected, leading yacht Dream (Robert Green) is currently 56 miles from Finish Line and is predicted to arrive mid-afternoon today, well outside the record of 19h 32m 56s set by Prowler in 1998. Audacious has had to withdraw from the Rudder Cup Melbourne to Devonport ocean yacht race After a troubled delivery from Adelaide to Melbourne Stuart Johnson’s Sydney 38 Audacious has had to withdraw from the Rudder Cup, Melbourne to Devonport ocean yacht race. The crew is very disappointed but also accepting that this happens with sailing. A fast and furious start – review of day 1 ORCV ocean races to Tasmania

Crash bang coming through! Some of our competitors caused dramas on the start line of the Melbourne to Hobart and Melbourne to Devonport ocean races, with four yachts caught up in collisions. They mustn’t have got the memo about it being a long race so 15 seconds on the start line probably doesn’t matter. Luckily winds were moderate but it was still enough to cause an early retirement of BKT JAMHU which was taking on water as a result of their collision. 2016 Mersey Yacht Club Flood Relief Raffle! Our very good friends at the Mersey Yacht Club (MYC) in Devonport are the finish host club for the ORCV's Melbourne to Devonport ocean yacht race. Many will recall this devastating footage in June 2016 that we shared on the ORCV Facebook Page of Mersey Yacht Club marina pontoon berths collapsing in wild weather that lashed Northern Tasmania, causing floods and debris in the Mersey river at levels that have never been seen before.
