Have you often thought about what it would be like to sail in Bass Strait, either just around to Westernport for the weekend, throughout the many fascinating islands, or to even venture further up the east coast to warmer waters for winter or a lap of Tasmania ?

Or have you contemplated joining your fellow club members who venture out the heads in the various ORCV Ocean Races over the warmer months to Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, King Island and even further to Launceston or Hobart in late December?

Is the only thing holding you back that uncertainty of what you need to know to get your boat ready, or the additional things to consider as a skipper, or even the personal preparation required as crew?

The Beyond the Bay roadshow presentation will focus on the enjoyment of venturing beyond club racing to the exciting world of ocean sailing. The roadshow will cover the history, role and activities of the ORCV in fostering ocean sailing as well as the many amazing destinations that await the prospective ocean sailor both racing and cruising.  A brief overview of the additional skills and equipment will be covered which are required to help make ocean sailing safer. These will be covered in more depth in the Beyond the Bay lecture series.

Key areas for the Beyond the Bay program covered will include:

• boat preparation and safety gear
• crew preparation, management, procedures and training (for your crew / team)
• practical radio operations, including on-shore tracking of your passage
• night sailing, watch keeping and provisioning
• Weather, tides and basic navigation

In addition, we will be running two on-water training events where participants will have the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice, with the guidance of an experienced mentor, if required:

• Overnight Sail on Port Phillip Bay finishing with an organised group BBQ lunch
• "Latitude" style day sail into Bass Strait
