The Latitude Ocean Race – Outlook
As the BIG weekend approaches it’s time to turn our eyes from Cat 3 checklists to the weather outlook.
The Race Director is still breathing easily, albeit with some slight apprehension as the forecast offers a bit more breeze for Saturday than it did a day or two ago. Here's how I see it at the moment but still early days of course!
A quick look at the synoptic situation gives us a good idea what’s going to happen from Friday through to Sunday morning.
A low pressure trough will move through on Friday resulting in the wind shifting from Northish to Southish on Friday. Saturday’s weather will be dominated by a high pressure system providing a North easterly air flow strengthening in the afternoon for the Latitude event before another trough passes through on Saturday night leaving us with a nice run back to Sandringham on Sunday.
Friday's Port Phillip Forecast reads;
"Northwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending west to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots during the morning then tending southerly during the afternoon then southeasterly at 10 to 15 knots during the evening."
Hmmm, not exactly my idea of fun, with your new found night sailing skills, some of you may prefer Thursday night based on the following outlook;-
"Northerly 15 to 25 knots turning north-westerly below 10 knots during the afternoon and evening"
The Big Event – Saturday
Meteye says a light North easterly breeze strengthening and veering as the day progresses. The tactics for positioning yourself on your latitude line for the upwind leg back to the Heads will make for some interesting calculations. Boats using spinnakers might even find they cross both the start and finish lines with the kites flying. For our part we'll have the deck chairs and the sunscreen out up on Arthur's Seat!
Getting Home - Sunday
Looks like being a brisk run home in a strengthening South to South Westerly but we'll look at that again in Sunday's pre-race weather briefing in the BYS tent.
Cheers, and have fun!
The Event Team,
Robert, Neville, David and Bruce
