Some skippers in the Melbourne to Osaka Race double handed race, enter on a boat they already own. Others buy one especially for the event. Either way, there’s still a lot of preparation needed. Then there’s another but rare group, who have an even harder task – building their boat. And we’ll meet one of them today.

It’s about seven years since Rod Smallman began the leisurely task of building his dream boat in a big shed on his vineyard.  Then a few months ago, he realised that in order to be ready for the Osaka double-hander in 2018, he had to move much quicker.
