AVW Day One - with a little help from my friends.
Audi Victoria Week got underway on January 21,2010 with the Docklands invitational. There was some high cloud about early that burned off around 10-12knots of breeze, the course was 150 @ 1.9nm, for two windward/returns. And I wasn't even there!
I understand that in the second race, 'Ocean Skins' had a recall and that 'Living Doll' had a "shocking" start, after a great first race. Snakes and ladders I guess.
Steb can be found at his website HERE, email is
I was wondering what was going to be the hero shot of the series - and then voila! MC Hammer (Prodder Time).
'Ocean Skins' the M2HE winner, 'Cougar II', 'Calm' and 'SMB Three and a Half'.
The new 'Shogun' has enough and goes the other way. 'Goldfinger' sails on. Did you check the heady tension before the start there team? From onboard the Finger, Adam Mannix tells me that "...ugly is the new fast!" Right Oh then.
Pre-start with the 'Runner', 'Doll', 'Quest' and 'Skins' and below there's plenty to watch out for with all those GP boats in the one place at the one time.
The "Doll" leading away for race one and that high cloud that had not burnt off as yet.
GAK's hair - awesome. Had it have been slightly closer up, it would have been the hero shot. We got any more there Steb?
I think that is Erin Foster in front of the sail.
So I would think Oceanburo, the SB3 people, got a return on their sponsorship dollar. I'll check with Scot from SA...
Right in the midst of it all - 'Extasea', with 'Shogun' and 'Quest'.
This was sooooooooooooooooo close to being the hero shot. Loved the symmetry of it all. Had 'Cougar II's kite been doused that little bit more, it would have been straight off to the pool room...
'Shamrock' - Tony Donnellan on the left, with Tim Donnellan saying "Hi".
Now whilst talking of 'Shamrock' this is Trevor Neate doing the sums, with Jemma Henderson sitting next to him. Trevor's son Johnno just won the Contender worlds in Queensland. Nice one.
'Ocean Skins' won the Red Wine Cup for first to Hobart from either coast, as well as the M2HE. Very nearly the first out the Heads as well...
'Extasea' were the Rudder Cup winners in the M2L at Xmas time.
'Extasea' are the reigning Offshore Champs and their good crew work would have to be a big reason for that.
'Cougar II' get set to go in, with the new 'Shogun' on the left and 'SMB 3.5' on the right...
Also hiking very hard on 'Scarlet Runner'. Love the bow wave Steb...
Matey, I know your face but not your name. Any help there Sam, Rob, Dave, Mitchy. OK. We now have a name. He's their bowman, Chris Maxted, who used to be mid bow on 'Living Doll'. Ah. The lure of the pointy end... Thanks for chipping in Sam.
The 'Runner' is ahead of 'Calm' here, as Sam Chandler gets the kite sheet set up for the gybe...
It's always worth keeping an eye on 'Terra Firma' for a vast array of reasons... Isn't it Deano?
'Audi Centre Melbourne' were out there too.
Interesting headware on ACM. It's not like you're doing 50knots with the French on a TransAt, now is it.
Must be a medical reason... Awesome SPF too.
As we continue with the SYC hour, this is 'Veloce' who worked 'Ocean Skins' all the way to the finish line in the M2HE.
There were some smiles when they had their IRC win confirmed, however...
'Shogun' in on the left, 'Cougar II' up the top and we are looking over the very pretty 'Calm', as part of the TP52 showdown...
Sunny day, Melbourne CBD in the background, but I know 'Calm' won't be happy being behind the 'Runner'. Conversely, Rob and the crew would be thrilled! Still. It's a lovely shot of your Audi Centre Brighton sponsorship, so that will make the next meeting with the Dealer Principal, David Pava, far more charming...
A Golden moment of sponsorship plugs! Truly Golden. Now then, if we only had the foot of the main off that side of the boom where it says www.cameronindustrial.com.au - if only eh?
Scotty Madden - Come on down!!!
'Goldfinger' returns back uphill.
Farr52OD plays with the RP46 'Shamrock'.
Fee Orwin was clearly having a good day! Excellent news.
A while ago I mentioned how the transom of the revised 'SMB 3.5' would look a lot like that of the 'Runner' and then hey, here's a shot for you to use John. Jim Pugh will be happy! (Plug, plug, plug.)
Certain 'Alfa Jnr' aspects here too... maybe it is just the white paint. At any rate, they lead after Day One. So there.
We're with 'Quest'...
Go the hiking! Follow his lead now... 'Scarlet Runner' is popping into view.
All red caps for the new 'Shogun'.
OK! So that's what you think then, eh?
All rightey then! This is 'Quest's response.
RSHYR overall winner 'Two True' and her boss...
'Two True's very near sister ship, 'Wicked', was meant to be out there as well. Let's hope the Walsh's can get her sorted with a new stick soon...
Our shooter loves Tug Boats. This one I think is a tender for the oil rigs...
Meanwhile the VIPs were slumming it on the Gin Palace.
Day two pics soon enough, so come back now, ya' all.
