Overview

There are many sources of weather information available to us. As sailors, it is imperative that we:

  • Understand the terminology (why an East Coast Low was not classed as a cyclone for instance...)
  • Know how the information is formulated and presented (why median wave heights are just that and why gusts are also highlighted over nominal breeze...)
  • Understand the limitations as applicable to the localised area we sail in
  • Can combine the information with our own observations and inputs.

The ORCV Meteorological Course can be completed in any of three ways. You may undertake either section or as the third alternative, both sections consecutively.

1. All About The Weather. This is the Basic understanding of weather. This course will not be held in 2012.
2. Yet More Weather. This is all about Advanced weather understanding, including long distance ocean racing and tropics. It runs for one day on Sunday 16th September, 2012.
3. From Becalmed to Force 12. The complete synoptic picture, usually combines both the Basic and Advanced curriculum.

Outcomes

This course is particularly presented as applicable to long-range, blue water sailing such as M2V and M2O, but is just as applicable for M2H and a quick jaunt on the Bay on a sunny Sunday, given where we live and how quickly it can change.

Pre-requisites

Nil for All About The Weather just a healthy interest in understanding your environment while you enjoy blue water yachting.

If you are planning to attend the Yet More Weather section on Sunday, we will expect you to have a comprehension of the basic concepts as presented in the Basic course, ideally together with some oceanic experience.

Course Outline

Subjects will include:
  • Upper atmosphere effects
  • Information sources such as weather fax, other sat phone comms and Grib files
  • Routeing applications and ocean systems including long-range races like M2V
  • An understanding of the application of diverse weather maps will be presented for more long-term forecasting.
Overall, previous students have regarded the course as an excellent guide for their continued self-training in the subject matter.

1. All About The Weather is designed for the beginner or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. It will look at how the weather works, what information sources are available, how to read weather maps and some practical exercises.

2. Yet More Weather is designed to go that bit further with detailed analysis of oceanic weather systems and upper atmosphere maps with specific reference to weather forecasting about Bass Strait, Victorian, Tasmanian, South Eastern Pacific and Coral Sea weather. In the afternoon section, you'll look at routing and weather fax programs, their uses, specific schedules for retrieving information and some practical exercises.

3. From Becalmed to Force 12 is designed to get you from 'ground zero' in a hurry. It is an immersion in weather for both days, where you'll be taken through all modern information and analysis techniques.
