Beyond the Bay Program Overview & Schedule 2017

(next BTB program will be run in 2019)

The “Beyond the Bay” program is a series of educational evening sessions, supervised weekend on-water events and mentoring support, providing participants with the opportunity, knowledge and support needed to travel beyond Port Phillip Bay (or beyond, or any inland waterway for that matter).

We know a lot of boat owners have extremely capable boats, as well as the dream of cruising the Australian Coast. There also many people who do not own a boat but would love to crew on such a journey. We think it is usually a combination of the lack of opportunity, the lack of knowledge and the lack of confidence which holds them back.

The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria has the skills, the experience and the opportunity to meet those needs.

And who knows, you may just like it enough to come Ocean Racing! Places are strictly limited (max 40 participants).

Latitude Challenge

Starts Queenscliff, finishes Blairgowrie Yacht club

The culmination of the program, an all weekend event. Participants need to safely navigate their way to Queenscliff on the Friday for a Saturday morning start. The event starts Saturday at the tail end of the ebb stream flow.  Competitors need to pass a defined latitude and be back through the heads by a declared cut off time, finishing at Blairgowrie Yacht Club for dinner and “graduation” ceremony. Competitors can then return at a leisurely pace Sunday or join in a fun pursuit race if they wish.

Participants who graduate (boat owners and/or crew) will earn an ORCV “Beyond the Bay” shirt.

  • Graduates must participate in at least five events including the Latitude challenge.
  • Honors will be awarded to participants who complete all seven events.
  • Each challenge event will have a trophy awarded.

  • The ORCV is obliged to comply with published minimum standards for safety for ocean going craft. These will be discussed in detail at the evening sessions. If people have concerns over boat compliance, we welcome them to call to discuss.
  • The ORCV is well placed to assist boat owners finding crew and/or crew finding boats. We are also well placed to assist boat owners borrowing/renting safety gear. Each boat will be assigned a mentor for the skipper and crew.

Persons must register individually for the programme which includes all education sessions and both on-water events.

  • ORCV Members fee: $150
  • Non ORCV Member: $300
  • ORCV Youth Member fee: $105
  • Non ORCV Youth Member fee: 210

NOTE: Participants (BTB or other crew) in an on-water event must be members of an Australian Sailing affiliated yacht club for insurance purposes. Temporary membership for an on-water event only is available via the ORCV web site: click here to purchase either a Bay Pass for the Overnighter ($30) or an Ocean Pass for the Latitude ($60).

These passes provide you with an Australian Sailing number (insurance) for an offshore race/event run by ORCV, incl. delivery back. They do not provide you with the benefits of a full ORCV membership (like discounts for courses, race entries, etc.).
