Australian Sailing - Special Regulations for Keel boats 2017-21

The Australian Sailing (AS) Special Regulations (SR’s) set out the criteria for yachts, their equipment and crews that are required when racing under YA endorsed races ( all ORCV races). They are available on-line.

Though the rules are in force for three years, Australian Sailing does from time to time make interim amendments that in some cases apply immediately so it is a good idea to keep a weather eye on their web page.

The latest version of the SR’s come into force on the 1st of July 2017. Focusing on category 1 and 2 races, there are many changes from the previous rules.  Some are minor but some of more significance so this coming winter would be a good time to make sure you are all ready to go for next summer by reading up on the latest changes.

Below is list of some of the changes:

  • Bow pulpit openings allowable subject to opening requirements
  • 9L emergency water replaced with 1L per crew member
  • If DSC installed, MMSI number must be programmed and device connected to a GPS
  • VHF mast head antenna required for Cat 1-3 only
  • Two means of weather information receipt
  • Watertight high power spotlight is required for Cat 1-3
  • AIS requried for Cat 1&2
  • Some publications may be electronic
  • Some medical/first aid changes
  • Some liferaft changes
  • Mainsail reef to 50% in lieu Trysail
  • There are other detailed changes too, refer Australian Sailing summary of changes
