Night Sailing and Watch Keeping. The overnight and long bay races are fast approaching on Port Phillip Club calendars. The ORCV Latitude series of seminars and races is designed to help prepare new skippers and crew to make the transition from short course and passage races in Port Phillip and to the longer races in and across Bass Strait. The first two seminars covered Boat preparation and Crew preparation and were conducted prior to the Latitude weekend in November 2012. This third seminar is timed to coincide with the longer overnight races run by the various clubs and which are open to yachts from all clubs (subject to the safety requirements). Coming up shortly there is the Royal Brighton Yacht Club Sir Thomas Lipton/Lady Nelson Overnight race, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron "Big Bay Challenge" and the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club "Port Phillip Sea Pilots" which this year returns to its 92 mile format. All provide excellent opportunities for new crew and skippers to gain experience night sailing and watch keeping in a relatively short race and without venturing out of Port Phillip. Even is you are not planning enter either race this year why not come along and find out what its all about.
