Bay Race of 36 nautical miles

Race Starts off Port Melbourne, at 1030 hours AEDT on December 26 (Boxing Day) every year.

 Description:

Since 1979, the Boxing Day Dash (in the new media age, we just cannot use 'Cock of the Bay' anymore, but the Rooster lives on...) race has been the annual feeder event for the fleet to get down to the bottom of the Bay for the Offshore Start on December 27. It also attracts many entrants not venturing offshore, but who still wish to be part of the grand spectacle, as it starts off Port Melbourne and the winds its way down the Bayside suburbs of St Kilda, Elwood, Brighton and Sandringham, before finishing off Blairgowrie on the Mornigton Peninsula. This is a fleet or all in start, which means over 100 boats all get underway from the one line, at the one time. The Boxing Day Dash is possibly the largest, single day, single start race in the Southern Hemisphere.

ORCV and BYS Petersville Regatta 27-30 December 2015

The Petersville Regatta is proudly returning to the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron (BYS) Sailing Calendar. This family friendly, relaxed regatta will be held from 27 – 30 December 2015 and is set to be reinstated as the club’s flagship annual event (proudly supported by BBQs Plus).

Back by popular demand, the Petersville Regatta returns to attract a competitive group of keel and cruising boats from across the Peninsula, Victoria and Australia to the family friendly, social atmosphere of the original regatta held during the 1980’s.

...a ‘spectacular event’ and the ‘social highlight’ of the season.

The return of the Petersville Regatta coincides with the launch of the new Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron clubhouse and the opening of the expanded marina. The regatta racing will take place over four consecutive days from 27 – 30 December, 2015. Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Commodore, Paul Devereux, advised the program will cater for racing, cruising and cruising non-spinnaker divisions. All participants will enjoy honorary membership throughout the Regatta with full access to the new clubhouse and expanded marina facilities.

This spectacular event will attract boat owners and crews from around the region and across the eastern seaboard and will follow the annual Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) Cock of the Bay race, which starts on Boxing Day morning at Port Melbourne and finishes at Blairgowrie. Some say there is no better way to work of the excesses of Christmas with the 34 nautical mile race down Port Phillip Bay, which traditionally serves as a feeder for the ORCV's blue-water classic Melbourne to Hobart and Rudder Cup Melbourne to Devonport ocean races, which both start from Portsea on 27 December, 2015.

ORCV Commodore, Neville Rose, has fond memories of competing in previous Petersville Regattas and delighted that it’s return is a great opportunity for any Cock of the Bay participants not going onto Hobart or Devonport, to continue to enjoy BYS’s legendary hospitality and this terrific regatta.

Located on Victoria’s southern Mornington Peninsula, Blairgowrie is one of Victoria’s leading holiday destinations, only a 75 – 90 minute drive from Melbourne. Adjacent to well known Sorrento and Portsea, Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron is one of the area’s most famous landmarks, with a distinctive pier and marina and stunning bayside location.

2015 Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron - New Visitor Wet Berths

Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron are looking forward to welcoming skippers and crews participating in the annual Cock of the Bay race back again this year.

BYS will again provide free rafting up inside their marina to all ORCV Cock of the Bay race participants on the 26th December.  This year however their marina extension will have been completed and there are new visitor wet berths available for rent.  BYS would like to extend an offer to boats participating in the Cock of the Bay to rent a new visitor wet berth for the night for a discounted price of $100.  BYS would also like to encourage skippers and crews who are not continuing onto Tasmania to consider continuing their stay with BYS and to take part in the Petersville Regatta  www.petersvilleregatta.com.au on 27-30 December, 2015.

Are you ready? ORCV Summer Season 2015-16


It is that time of the year when everyone in Melbourne yearns for some warm weather and starts thinking about the spring and summer months ahead.
The ORCV has planning well underway. We will be heading back to  Stanley for the first race of the offshore season and Smithton Lions club are making preparations to host us in the new Harbour shed with festivities, entertainment, food and bar services. They are excited about the ORCV returning to the home of "The Nut” and are looking forward to laying out the welcome mat. The Stanley Race is a qualifier for the Hobart East and West coast races.
For those short on time, the Rudder Cup Race will have yachts heading to Devonport this year. Mersey Yacht Club have announced the “Advantage Pharmacy Top of the Island Race" which along with the ORCV Cock of the Bay Race completes the format of the Bass Strait Series. This is a great event for yachties who stepped up to some of the ORCV coastal races this year to venture a little further into Bass Strait.
Hobart East or Hobart West- which way will you head? The option to take the route outside of Flinders Island and down the east coast or across the strait and down the rugged scenic west coast is yours to choose. Arriving in Hobart amid the gala celebrations for New Year should be on everyone’s bucket list!

 Mercedes III - Cock of the Bay again?

Mercedes III led the Australian team to victory in the 1967 Admiral’s Cup, with a top points performance. She more than fulfilled the expectations of designers Ted Kaufman and Ben Lexcen.

In 1989, under new owner Martin Ryan, Mercedes III won the Cock of the Bay on Channel Handicap, a rating system with a strong age allowance which is no longer in use in Australia.

The new rating systems are AMS and IRC, introduced well after Mercedes III was designed and therefore giving a distinct advantage to modern yachts designed to these systems. Someone forgot to tell Mercedes III. Whilst 2014 is the 25th anniversary of her 1989 win, it’s also the 10th anniversary of her win on AMS in 2004 and 2008 (by 7 seconds) and follows 1st, 1st and 2nd placings on IRC Division 2 over the last 3 years.

 

 

“Our racing calendar is concentrated on Classic yacht racing around Williamstown, Hobsons Bay and St Kilda with 25 other Classic yachts. Once or twice a year we take on the modern boats. We are hoping for typical Cock of the Bay conditions - 25 knots plus from the south. She is a beautifully balanced yacht that thrives in the Port Phillip chop” says owner of 27 years Martin Ryan.

The Cock of the Bay starts off Port Melbourne and finishes at Blairgowrie. The yachts are best viewed from the piers from Port Melbourne to Sandringham, which is their last onshore mark until Blairgowrie.

Results of the Cock of the Bay, conducted by ORCV and a preliminary to the Melbourne – Devonport and Melbourne – Hobart races can be viewed on www.orcv.org.au from about 9pm on Boxing Day.

A Notice to Competitors for the Cock of the Bay race has been issued. Please read this carefully and take the appropriate actions.

We recommend that you update your entry as directed with crew names and addresses for the issuing of wrist bands to comply with the Liquor Licensing Laws at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron by 12noon on Tuesday 23rd December 2014.


This will assist Blairgowrie with hospitality arrangements for you and your crew.
