ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

The things you learn.

If you can cast your mind back to Race Four of the 2010 MWS, you may remember this © Steb Fisher pic of the crew aboard our Love Boat, Nutcracker.

Well, we cannot see a lot of his face, it was cold as you all know far better than I, but the guy most for'ard and in red is David Sasson.

"He was particularly pleased to have scored a line honours win with us, as he had just heard the night before that his two younger sons, Anton (15) and Julian (11) had finished in second place overall in the 80-boat fleet of the International Cadet Worlds in Puck, Poland. The MWS line honours victory gave him at least some sort of bragging rights against their sensational achievement on the world sailing stage", said our pal, Chris Furey.

"As a bit of background, Nutcracker is heavily populated with SYC and Black Rock YC off the beach (OTB) sailors and parents. We get to do the ORCV MWS simply because it's the off-season for the kids, so we can go out have a play ourselves. For much of the rest of the year we are heavily involved with running races, coaching, training, rescuing, mentoring, delivering, repairing and so forth, for the kids and their dinghies."

Hey Chris, I just worked out that Anton is only one year away from applying for age-dispensation to be your replacement on the bow in an ORCV event!!! Cool, eh?

Now anyway, it really is good to see the things you learn about with a gig like this. More importantly, it's great to see some younger sailors going for it overseas and doing brilliantly!!! Three Cheers for Anton and Julian. Well done to them and also, all the people it would have taken to get them over there and racing!

The full MWS results to date are HERE. The next race of the MWS is Race Six, on August 29.

So. If you would like to go for a run with the Colts or any of the other sections represented by the Bay's best, you can. Individual entry for MWS races is HERE and the M2G is HERE - remember that Cruising Divisions are offered for the latter event.
