ORCV West Offshore Coastal Sprint Races is a new initiative from ORCV Sailing for 2019/20 season in response to skippers wanting more Category 3 races. The ORCV West Offshore Coastal Sprint races have been designed as short distance ocean sprints to provide a crew development pathway for longer ocean races and as a stand-alone coastal racing program. Each Coastal Sprint race aims to have skippers and crew home Saturday evening.
As with all ORCV races, you can compete Fully crewed, Double handed or up to 4 + Autopilot.
Each ORCV West Offshore Coastal Sprint race is classified Category 3, avoiding the substantial equipment upgrade costs required for Category 2 races. There is no requirement for HF Radio, Satellite phone storm sails or Life Rafts (those under 12m). The ORCV Coastal Sprints are perfect training platform when combined with Melbourne to Stanley prior to the Christmas Ocean races of ORCV Melbourne to Hobart or Rolex Sydney to Hobart.
Each race starts off Queenscliff early on a Saturday and approximately 50nml sailing to a point before turning around and finishing at a finish line off Portsea Back Beach.
Race 1 race is from Queenscliff to Western Port and returns to finish off Portsea Back Beach. The destinations of Race 2 and Race 3 will be subject to weather and will be decided on the day to either Split Point (Aireys Inlet) or a triangle]. All races return to a finish line off Portsea Back Beach.
We also announce a new ORCV Coastal Championship award for the Skipper with best three Category 3 results drawn from the Coastal Sprint Series and the ORCV Apollo Bay Race.
