Ocean Race distance: 55 nautical miles (approx)
Safety Category: 3
Start Location: Queenscliff
Finish Location: Port Phillip Heads
The ORCV West Offshore Coastal Sprint races have been designed as short distance ocean sprints to provide a crew development pathway for longer ocean races and as a stand-alone coastal racing program. Each Coastal Sprint race is roughly 55nm and aims to have skippers and crew home Saturday evening.
As with all ORCV races, you can compete fully crewed, double handed or up to 4 + autopilot.
The ORCV West Offshore Coastal Sprint race are classified as Category 3, avoiding the substantial equipment upgrade costs required for Category 2 races. There is no requirement for HF Radio, Satellite phone, storm sails or Life Rafts (those under 12m). The ORCV Coastal Sprints are perfect training platform when combined with Melbourne to Devonport prior to the 50th Melbourne to Hobart "Westcoaster" or other ocean races.
Each race starts off Queenscliff early on a Saturday. You head to either Western Port, Split Point (Aireys Inlet) or complete a triangle before turning around to finish off Portsea Back Beach.
We also announce a new ORCV Coastal Championship award for the Skipper with best three Category 3 results drawn from the Coastal Sprint Series and the ORCV Apollo Bay Race.
