Just six minutes into the race Primitive Cool was unfortunately forced to retire due to equipment failure. Reports say a main winch failed which is a shame for John Newbold and his crew in their first ocean race in his new boat.
The Race Director is Neville Rose assisted by Roger and Michelle Wale and Rik Head. Kelly Rajak (one of Dry White's crew in the Port Fairy race) also got up early and went out on the start boat CG9 with Gary Tomlins and his crew from Coast Guard Queenscliff.

Neville, Roger and Michelle arrived at Queenscliff just after midnight in the ORCV Race Control Van and had a slumber party (very cosy) in the van before commencing their various pre-race duties at 0400hrs this morning. This includes speaking with our good friends at Lonsdale VTS to confirm shipping movements through the “Heads”.
With the “Heads” clear of any in or out bound commercial shipping, the race started on schedule at 0630hrs in flat seas and 15-18 knots of breeze from the southwest and light occasional drizzle.
The ORCV Race Control Van was positioned at the Port Phillip Sea Pilots pier, near Drapers Reef and was in a great position to get a good view of the fleet as the boats vied for the best position at the start line.
