ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Cool Racing.

It may well have been cold out there yesterday, but MWS Race Director, Robin Hewitt was impressed with the day and the racing!

"The wind was just a little west of North and at 20 to 25kts for the start of Race Two, dropping to 20kts at the start of Race Three and then yet further again, to 15 kts by the close of racing. The Div1 start was well contested, with just the one boat over and in direct contrast, the Div2 start was fairly relaxed. By the time that the Div2 start for Race Three came about, it was their turn for the hotly contested affair, with several yachts right on the line", said Robin.

"There were four retirements and a few kite dramas (and we have the pics to show it, Robin). It was very close racing for both races, but especially so, for Race Three. Audacious, Clockwork and Schuss were living proof! It was certainly a cold day, where it had been forecast to be worse than it actually, but the rain never amounted to much.

"Perhaps Race Two was enough for many, as several excused themselves for the day's second race, despite the fact that it was excellent sailing conditions out there, if a touch cold", Robin finished with.

Given the fact that Race Three was so much fun, I am sure those that went back to the pen, won't be doing that again...

Fawkner Beacon data for the day - in line with Robin's thoughts...

Now it is with many thanks to Steb Fisher that we have some pics to review and no, these are not the sum total, just a little tease, if you will. Many thanks to David Judge and Tony Dawson from Hobson's Bay Yacht Club, for making sure Steb had a great vessel to shoot from. Cheers on that!

Puff of smoke and Calm has the bow (I mean prodder) right there. Nice. Who was driving on the day, Slotty?

2009 Lord Warden trophy winners/holders seem to be indicating they are after it again. Comments Rob (Rob Sill - the boat's owner)?

So we both reached for the gun - takes a bit of skill to get the puff and bows like this, when you're bobbing around, 60m away... Well done, Steb.

Long line allows Hush to come in on Port. Not for long, however... The Flying Tiger, Tigris, is the one with the slab in and is launched. Alibi is off and running in the left of frame.

Magazan53 bears away - just a little early, hey Nick?

StartORCV10-R3-045 copy

Time to come back up now, it would seem. The Love Boat in good position, with a full rig, powered up and in clear breeze over Jo Harpur and Spirit of Freya on their right. The Cappers (Under Capricorn) are making a go of it from the Second Row....

StartORCV10-R3-047 copy

Sales Logix main in there, which definitely means team Beyond Outrageous were out racing. How was the kite action team? Not sure Tigris is going to have enough stick to get away with a huge slab in and full rigs to windward.

More soon (and as if you didn't expect that....)

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G) - 11/09/10

NOR & Online entry for this sensational event, now open.

The annual Melbourne to Geelong race sails off on Saturday, September 11, 2010. If you entered the entire MWS, then you're already automatically entered into this race too, but you do need to complete some more information for this particular race. You can also just enter the M2G race only, if you like, but I guess that means you're giving the game away about your favourite pastime after sailing - partying!!!

There will be separate Cruising Divisions (kite and no kite) as well as a Cruising Series, which will incorporate the passage race (Race Five) of the MWS, which is on August 15. Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions coming soon.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry if you're already doing the MWS.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry for just the M2G race only and it looks like this, below:

So then. If you' ve got the boat tied up to the quay and think you should give it a run, then do. The M2G is a passgae race and if you do not want to be in with all the racers, even if you normally are, then go in one of the Cruising Divisions. While you're at it, get your clubmates to come along as well. Why? Party. That's why...

They have raced before, but something like White Swan is perfect for a lovely Winter's jaunt in one of the Cruising Divisions, should you not wish to have to find a lot of crew. Pic © Steb Fisher.

Cape Canaveral.

"Roger Houston. Wind is looking great for racing tomorrow - between 18 to 25knots."

Please note that the Brass said races, plural, so I think you can lock that one in and make sure you bring LUNCH! Capiche. Updated PredictWind model below and one from two days ago is at the bottom of the piece.

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Adam's Rocket.

You'll definitely earn your keep this Sunday in the second round of the MWS, given what the PredictWind models are showing (and many thanks to PredictWind for supplying them).

2010_MWS_PWSunday

OK. So both models concur that it's all out of the North and that can mean nice little bullets to really sort you out. Equally, the planing boats are going to be going, 'Flat water. Northerly. 20kn+. Yahoo Baby!'

The Brass have also lobbed in with, "Crew work is going to determine the winners and we would suggest an early night on Saturday!" Reading between the lines I think you can take that as the Race Director has two races for the day in his mind...

One mob that will surely get a blast out of this are our "We've got a fractional bag and it's onboard" pals - Beyond Outrageous. Go get 'em Ian Lindsay and the gang... (Pic courtesy of Chris Furey)

So to Adam and all the other sailors, there's your rocket with the news! Get set.

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Colts to gallop for their own prize!

The Melbourne Colts (as in Sydney 38s) are now going to have an Ullman Sails prize to work for as part of the 2010 MWS.

2010_MWS_ColtsLineUp

Sam Haines from Ullman Sails Melbourne continues his close association with the Colts. The winning Colt in the MWS will receive and Ullman gear bag full of apparel and importantly, a $200 voucher good for repairs and the like at the Melbourne loft.

This great prize, along with the newly developed AMS rating, specifically formulated by John Chatham, will ensure the five Colts in the series will be tussling all the way to the bar in Geelong in September (the M2G is on September 15 this year). The results table for the Colts will be utilising the new AMS rating of 0.987 for the traditional 7/8 fractional rig vessels of Chutzpah38, Clockwork and Mille Sabords, where as Challenge and Audacious, with their increasingly popular masthead rigs, will race under 0.997.

Ordinarily, there would be a queue to see the Handicapper, but alas, everyone is “… keen to do the talking out on the track. No one is struggling with these numbers”, said Greg Clinnick, the Skipper of our current HCOTW, Audacious. After the first stoush on July 4, Chutzpah38 leads from Audacious, Challenge, Clockwork and Mille Sabords. The Ullman Sails ORCV Sydney 38 Winter Series is part of the work up plans of these crews, with their National Championships being held as part of the Australia Day weekend fun and games in Geelong. A strong interstate contingent is expected, with boats from S.A. and NSW already confirmed. Close OD racing on the testing Corio Bay course is assured.

Psst. Ullman Sails Melbourne have teamed up with ORCV pal, Mark Rimington. Their operations are now in Mark’s loft at 77 Beach Road, Sandringham. Look out for a new coffee machine on site, I am told. Perhaps it is some initiation gift demanded by the other neighbours, YV and Anchor Marine…

Next MWS Race Day is July 18, with the gun @1030hrs. Fun, fun, fun.
