Batter Up!

Actually, in the case of Sunday's racing, I think it should really be, rug up!!!

There may be a little difference in the timeframes for the arrival of the front on Sunday, but 15-25knots looks to be the order of the day. Now by the time it clocks through to the Southerly quadrant, I think woollen jocks should really be the order of the day! Perhaps this is what led the Brass to say "It will definitely be a one race day, as it going to be so cold." Well, we certainly would not want to freeze the walls of a brass humpy, now would we...

2010_MWS_PWSunday1810Map

As it starts to clock at around race time, this model shows that it may be a bit lighter than expected...

2010_MWS_PWSunday1810

These models feel it will start to clock just before racing and get stronger from there, hopefully when most of you are back in the shed already...

So there you have it. Cold. Blustery. And a bit wet. Perfect MWS weather. Rightey Oh. Yes. I think I will use that as a headline somewhere. There will be a further update, in due course, but lock it in. I reckon you're going racing (especially as there would seem to be no significant scenarios in the forecast).

The full MWS results to date are HERE.

You can still enter individual MWS races HERE and the M2G is HERE - remember that Cruising Divisions will be offered for the latter event.

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G) - 11/09/10

Cruising Division has it's own Thunder.

Pretty Woman may well have ben the first entrant in the M2G Cruising with Spinnaker Division, but she has also been joined by Thunder, a Nolex 30.

I wanted to ask the owners what had inspired them to partake in this newest of categories for the ORCV and to show our appreciation for their entry, as well. Tony Garvey said "Thanks for your interest in our boat and us. We are members of RBYC and do a fair bit of cruising, as well as the club races on Wednesday and Saturday, but the thing we all really enjoy, are the longer Bay races. So, the ORCV's Cruising with Spinnakers is the ideal division for us, as usually there is only the three owners as crew, which are myself and Robina and Brenton Smith. We did the Passage Race earlier in the year but couldn't get any more time off work and this time we are looking forward to the staying the weekend and enjoying the Saturday night entertainment etc. Cheers Tony."

Well that sounds like marvellous inspiration for anyone else who likes to get out there, but perhaps without the need to organise a massive crew or get too busy to have a whole lot of fun.

Now, the annual Melbourne to Geelong race sails off on Saturday, September 11, 2010. If you entered the entire MWS, then you're already automatically entered into this race too, but you do need to complete some more information for this particular race. You can also just enter the M2G race only, if you like, but I guess that means you're giving the game away about your favourite pastime after sailing - partying!!!

There will be separate Cruising Divisions (kite and no kite) as well as a Cruising Series, which will incorporate the passage race (Race Five) of the MWS, which is on August 15. The M2G Notice of Race is ready for your perusal already and the Sailing Instructions are coming soon.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry if you're already doing the MWS.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry for just the M2G race only and it looks like this, below:

So then. If you' ve got the boat tied up to the quay and think you should give it a run, then do. The M2G is a passgae race and if you do not want to be in with all the racers, even if you normally are, then go in one of the Cruising Divisions. While you're at it, get your clubmates to come along as well. Why? Party. That's why...

Watching. Waiting. Thinking.

The weather for this Sunday's installment (Race Four) of the MWS certainly looks interesting, this far out. The BoM reveals this information presently.

Port Phillip Forecast for Sunday

Winds: North to Northwesterly 20 to 30 knots shifting West to Southwesterly at a similar strength during the morning. Seas: 1 to 2 metres.

Melbourne Forecast for Sunday

Cloudy. Scattered showers with local hail and thunder. City. Few showers. Windy. Min 8 Max 12

2010_MWS_Sun1810_BOM

Seabreeze sees it as such:

2010_MWS_Sun1810_SBreeze

So all that has the Brass watching, waiting and thinking. What I believe, is that a time for a go/no-go decision will be nominated, most likely on Saturday, which will mean keep your eyes posted to this site, your emails and SMS.

Living the dream.

Our Peter Blake caption competition winner, from New Competition, is Shane La Peyre. Shane used to have part of the hugely successful Farr1020, Vapour Trail. He's a very tidy sailor and a happy lad too.

A while ago, he and Maryvonne decided to go and live the dream. They sold the house, put the gear into two containers and bought a boat to do a circumnavigation in. Rockin! There was a small set back when Shane fell off the boat whilst on the hardstand and has had six months with braces, pins and a whole lot of metal in and on his leg, but they have got it all sorted and they are off. Well done. Mucho, mucho respect.

Apart from all that, Shane managed to send us the winning email for the Peter Blake competition, which is below. We'll hold the prize in escrow, until they get back in a couple of years...

"Hi there. I write this to you all from the Caribbean Sea, as we start our circumnavigation with our Beneteau Oceanis 50, which we purchased in St. Maarten. I have been actively following the website with all the news and well written articles about the M2V and the start of the MWS, too. Over here at the moment in St Lucia, it is 2215 hrs, 31 degrees Celsius with the humidity at 75%."

"All I can think that my good mate, Peter Blake, is saying as he finished that race is, 'That race was ball shrinking cold!!' Pete is a great bloke and never seems to miss an event. I had his son Simon here for two weeks around two months ago.... I don't see him in the shot!!!" (Well yes. Peter's sons are good value and always a delight to go for a yacht with...)

"Keep up the good work. Congrats to all those in the M2V.... and the ORCV." (Aw shucks, Shane, but the Committee, Steb and all involved, thank you!)

"Cheers - Shane La Peyre and Maryvonne aboard SV Gem"

This is our first day out from St Maarten. It was a bit of a lumpy sail (not when this photo was taken obviously), but we were glad to get away.
You can follow Shane and Mv HERE and we'll have the odd snippet on this site too!

Done and Dusted.

These are the final Steb Fisher images from Race Three of the 2010 MWS. Kind of handy when the next round is this Sunday, August 1.

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-051

The GenIV, Farr-penned, TP52 - Calm.

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-053

Willow and the well-oiled Calm crew are on the same points in IRC as current MWS leader, Wicked, but hold second spot for the moment, on countback. No doubt the team will be getting themsleves sorted for a huge Summer campaign. Good luck. We'll be watching. Calm won M2G and M2S last year and I think they would like that double again.

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-056

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-234

Still reckon this has PT Boat/MTB overtones. Just about as fast too, but heaps better mileage, as they don't have to feed three RR Merlins like the WWII icons. No comments from anyone the last time I mentioned it, so am giving it another run...

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-347

Delightful with Horizon Sprint's kite coming at them.

Sm5252ORCV10-R3-349

Magic with a true 'Steb' on display.

Second time to the top (hitch visible off Goldie's quarter) and leader just finishing hoist, as they come back at them.

Use the squirts and soak down where possible.

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-249

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-353

Ninety Seven, Wicked and Schuss involved in their own party as the Finger marches back up to the top.

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-356

Yes. Wet. Chris Adam and Leith aren't that unhappy, however. Reckon that's Nigel Jones under that cap fairly animated, as well.

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-360

Bit of squirt appearing on the surface where they're heading...

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-406

Sm8880ORCV10-R3-527

No gun maybe, but leading Div1 PHS with a comfy five point break, should keep them inspired and coming back for more.

We're going to finish Race Three with pics of the Start, as the next one is just five more sleeps away (from Tuesday 27/7) and so, will get you motivated for the next outing.

Busy times here with Div2 start.

nutcracker, now with full hoist mainsail going for it.

StartORCV10-R3-043

Cpt Sally Williams driving Spirit of Freya coming down the line.

StartORCV10-R3-046

Alibi ends up with Poll Position. Freya carved a good hole above Nutcracker, which is a bonus as she has not gone full hoist and so gets to stay to windward and keep the squirt.

StartORCV10-R3-048

anotherSwordfish Trombone and Beyond Outrageous in the guts of it and Tigris, still terribly short-hoisted, has great start. Alison Binks driving I think.

StartORCV10-R3-049

Hush is the one doing the Buffalo Girls here and boy have they got her wound up!!!!

StartORCV10-R3-050

That's some gains you're making Hush - almost two for one. These are subsequent frames so just over a second apart. Alison also getting the most from the super slippery Tigris, despite apparent lack of grunt.

What will we find to talk about next???
