ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

In all Series-ness.

OK. After Pink Love Boat, which looked at the results on the day, we now have the MWS series-to-date results posted. The highlights are below and before we go to that, here's what Robin Hewitt, the Race Director on the day, had to say about it all. "The forecast was for 11 degrees maximum temperature and a gale warning had been issued, so a few stayed home. Conditions were, in fact, idyllic, with flat seas and 10-12kts. The day was cold, but the start was HOT and required a general recall, as a result. Goldfinger was toey and deservedly so, it was her day and she built a comfortable lead throughout the race."

"Division Two had Nutcracker lead throughout and Lou Abraham's, Challenge, cleaned up the Colts. At about noon the wind shifted from West to SW and the temperature dropped too. The shift brought a stronger breeze, which reached 25kts in the puffs, but mostly just above twenty. The sea began to build. but all yachts had finished before anything got ugly."

Still leading AMS and IRC - we'll have a comment from Mark soon... It's now arrived and it goes a little like this.

"Hi JC. Have now thawed out a little after today's race. A cold, tough day on the water for participants, including the Wicked Ones. We are really happy with our result today and want to congratulate Challenge, who we just could not hold onto and also Extasea, for a great race. Like last time, the Wicked crew performed sensationally again today, with no significant incidents and He of the Loud Shorts (Smithy, were they over the wets today?) was spot-on with the shifts, particularly the big left-hand shift mid-race. With the ugly forecast, we went with our ocean main today, which may have cost us a little when the wind was down, but still seemed to work OK for us. Another tight tussle around the track with the Colts and Jazzy, which makes this racing so much fun, despite the weather. Pumped with our current position in the Series, but there is still plenty of racing to go..... cheers, Mark"

And cheers to you and the Wicked Ones, as well!!!

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Pink Love Boat.

Rob Davis, the driver of our Love Boat, Nutcracker, was "Tickled Pink!" with their Division Two gun earlier on this afternoon. "Not sure what all the brouhaha was about the weather", he said with a smile as they headed back into the quay, just moments after they had crossed the line. No doubt he was looking at some of the squalls appearing ominously a little further down the Bay, as he said it. It has certainly kicked in some now, as the Fawkner Beacon chart shows.

2010_MWS_Fawkner010810

Chris Furey, from onboard Nutcracker as well, said of their continuing tussle with INSX, "We're loving the battles with INSX. It was our turn to get up today, but wow, just a couple of feet in it after all that racing is just great!" He went on to add "Also absolutely loved the Olympic Course. We went around the top with the fractional Bag and soon discovered we were way underdone - have not had to do a peel for about three years, so that was interesting, but thankfully, all OK."

Getting the Div1 gun today was Goldfinger. In speaking with her driver, Peter Blake, I got the impression that it was certainly cold out there. "That went really well. The wind favoured the boats behind on one of the runs, when it started to clock around. They got to do the whole leg on the one gybe and go straight into the mark. Still, we're happy to be in the pen and the bar now. Best of all, we did not break anything!" Peter is always up for a laugh, as well and also added that, "You were right and I was wrong! You even gave us some sunshine."

The only retirement I am aware of presently, is Spirit of Freya, who retired at the bottom mark and headed for home at RBYC.

Moving on then, we have the tables to review. Firstly from today and then subsequently, form the overall standings.

Oh Yes!

At this time, you are racing on Sunday. Please keep a weather eye on this site and there will be more posts tomorrow, Saturday, but dig the full thermals out. It'll be one race and then back into the showers.

These are the Friday evening models and charts, with thanks to our friends at PredictWind.

2010_MWS_PWSunday1810Chart2

Still some significant variance between models, which is why there is such close attention being paid to the developments...

2010_MWS_PWSunday1810Map2

Not that dissimilar to the original posting in Watching. Waiting. Thinking.

Thank you for all your calls and emails and we'll continue to bring you the best and most current information we have access to.

CVD!

Tony Bull from Ullman Sails Geelong sent me a note after reading Batter Up!, saying that Race Four of the MWS this Sunday is "Shaping up to be what us Sailmakers call a CVD!" (as in Commercially Viable Day.) I got to meet Tony in person recently at a CYAV meeting. As for this comment, I did ask and he said with the same sort of joviality as when he talked with me last month, "It's a phrase I use quite regularly when walking past race committees and/or clients on the pier."

TonyBull

Tony with a Shogun shirt on...

He'll be out on Extasea with Paul Buchholz and the crew, so we'll all have to keep an eye out, as this is what Team Eckky achieved at the end of the 2009 M2G - Have a great time out there.

ArtsyFartsyExtasea

All Paul had to say of this one was "Two headies for the day - expensive!" - Ah, like yeah...
