ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Did someone say breeze?

Below are the observations from Fawkner Beacon for the day, so you can see that slide off to very mild as the Division Two and Cruising with Spinnaker boats went to the line.

2010_MWS_Fawkner150810

Whereas below was what was happening at my place at the same time - check out the 120% spikes in the gusts!!! Now they're bullets.

2010_MWS_Nobbys150810

OK. Off to the Division One tables for Race Five of the 2010 MWS.

On the day, Goldfinger put her waterline length to good use and overcame her rating.

The series to date runs hot and you have Goldinger sitting just outside the top three, so expect this to be one category to be fought over all the way to Geelong.

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

It's a beautiful day!

"A lovely sail, flatter than anticipated with the breeze staying mostly out of the North at the 20knots mark, but by 1300hrs it had actually slid back down to 10. They sailed Course Two, so it was a short beat to R2, then a kite run down to SPG and a long beat back up to P3. Mostly windward/leewards for the day", was how Rear Commodore, Simon Dryden, put it.

"A bit cloudy and a bit rainy, from time to time, with the odd squirt about", was Steb's input. "We collected a black jacket that stepped off for a swim from Extasea and it will be at Hobbos for collection", he added.

Little wonder then that the gold boat led them around the track then. Peter Blake and Kate Mitchell's Goldfinger crossed the line at 1209hrs, then it was XLR8, Extasea, Jazz Player and Ninety Seven. The last boat of Division One was Mille Sabord who got over the line at around 1252hrs, just as the leader of Div2 approached, which was the RP36, Gienah. Young Ones and Nutcracker followed her.

In fact, you could say the day was completely Auric - The Gun, 1st IRC and 3rd PHS!!!!

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Roger. Roger. (GO for R5 Passage Race).

We have clearance, Clarence. The Brass have said 'GO' for Sunday!!!

"The Bureau has forecast a gale warning for tomorrow, Sunday, which is when we intend to run a race. If you look at the MSL (Mean Sea Level) prognosis, you will see that the front will be past Melbourne by start time tomorrow and the next front will cross over Melbourne late on Sunday night, so I am quite satisfied that we will have suitable conditions in which to run a race. I will see you on the water", said Simon.

2010_MWS_BoM150810MSLPrognosis

"Looking at the wind model from the Bureau of Meteorology for Sunday @1300hrs, you will see that all the high winds will be at the bottom end of the Bay, so should not effect our race area."

2010_MWS_BoMWindModel1300_150810

"The next model I have for you, is from our friends at PredictWind and it looks to me that its timing is out, but the winds are well within the allowable wind range for racing. The map below is from 1000hrs."

2010_MWS_PWSunday150810Chart1000

"This one, below, is from 1300hrs."

2010_MWS_PWSunday150810Chart1300

"Lastly, the forecast table from PredictWind has the front passing through the race course in the afternoon, which still could happen, but my money is on an early AM change."

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

White out!

Not the correction fluid variety either. The wind and spray version! Herewith is Steb Fisher's final batch from Race Four of the 2010 MWS.

In the previous piece, More than a few, Stampede was on her way to the line just behind Chutzpah38. Now we have a few shots of her a little closer in...

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1329

That's 52 feet of Elliott Cruiser/Racer flying about...

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1330

Great stuff, indeed.

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1332

I reckon Greg (Elliott) would be pretty chuffed with this one!

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1333

Me - I like this one!

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1334

Plenty of steam up in this image.

Sm6ORCV10-R5-1335

Christopher Gendala and the three other souls who took Stampede around the course on the day.

R22ORCV10-R5-1336

Next to come in was Bombora. Almost one of which is whipping out of her tail - yeah, so maybe overstating it, but then...

R22ORCV10-R5-1337

Schüss appearing on the scene with her, too.

R22ORCV10-R5-1338

XX = criss cross

R22ORCV10-R5-1339

Hey there team.

R22ORCV10-R5-1341

Hi gang. Having fun? Michael Pisani - are you in this lot?

R22ORCV10-R5-1347

As you know by now, Steb had been getting a lot of well, 'Steb's on the day and this is just one more of his trademarks. Even the keel is visible in this one!

Swordfish Trombone, another member of the 40-somethings, is making her charge for the line, as well.

R22ORCV10-R5-1349

"We're going to come to you in a second..."

R22ORCV10-R5-1351

"...and give you one of your new favourites as a bonus!"

R22ORCV10-R5-1353

"YeeHa. We're done."

R336ORCV10-R5-1356

Here's Swordy!

B63ORCV10-R5-1358

We're with Schüss now and it is Clockwork also in frame...

B63ORCV10-R5-1359

Now that's one cool image...

B63ORCV10-R5-1360

Strings. Maybe they're trying to floss that last little bit...

B63ORCV10-R5-1361

Over we go to the other board...

B63ORCV10-R5-1362

... take a wave for your trouble...

B63ORCV10-R5-1363

... and then you're done. "Phew. Glad that's over."

B63ORCV10-R5-1364

Power up as you barrel off towards home.

B63ORCV10-R5-1368

A joy ride. Probably deserve one after being out in that...

B63ORCV10-R5-1369

My new favourite - the stern wave!

Clockwork just finished, in behind Schüss here.

Sm3838ORCV10-R5-1370

Clockwork gets some more water on the foredeck.

Sm3838ORCV10-R5-1371

And then wouldn't you know it. More, again.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1377

Where did I put the hull?

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1379

Here. We'll put some water all over it so you can find it.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1380

Mitchey. I know you wanted a series of your wipeout, but alas, you'll just have to do with this lot...

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1381

Go on! Get into it.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1382

Spray. Spray. Spray.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1385

Have some more.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1386

WooHoo.

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1393

Now that looks a little more civilised...

Sm50ORCV10-R5-1394

Feather that main...

B220ORCV10-R5-1437

Second to None then arrives at the scene.

B220ORCV10-R5-1439

It too wants to show you some spray.

B220ORCV10-R5-1443

Hello. Look who we have here.

B220ORCV10-R5-1445

He's the one looking at straight at us...

B220ORCV10-R5-1448

Strings, team.

B220ORCV10-R5-1449

It's John Spencer, the Commodore of RBYC.

R75ORCV10-R5-1397

Halcyon goes the spray thing for us, too.

R75ORCV10-R5-1399

Dig in. No. It's not dinner time.

R75ORCV10-R5-1400

Have some sun for your trouble, though...

R75ORCV10-R5-1403

You're gonna get that!

R75ORCV10-R5-1404

Ah huh!

R75ORCV10-R5-1405

Hhhmmm. Salty? Just go and make a chip commercial and you'll be fine.

R75ORCV10-R5-1406

Is it up?

R75ORCV10-R5-1407

... that precedes down, or down that precedes up? That is the question...

R75ORCV10-R5-1408

... maybe it is wet with a bit of wet thrown in?

R75ORCV10-R5-1409

No. It is up...

R75ORCV10-R5-1410

So that must make this an upper! Perhaps that is sailing, in general.

R75ORCV10-R5-1411

Chris (Tucker) will love this image!

R75ORCV10-R5-1412

Try explaining this to a non-sailor. 'Well, you see. You get unbelievably cold, super-wet and then you put yourself into these amazing positions, all the while the boat's moving and you don't want to put your hand near something that could bite back really hard or fall in...."

R75ORCV10-R5-1452

Add a touch of white.

R75ORCV10-R5-1453

And then some more and you have a white-out. Here is the hero pic. There were plenty in this batch, but we wanted to applaud our new friends, who've been really getting into it and enjoying themselves in the process, despite (or is that because of) things like this!

R75ORCV10-R5-1454

All is calm again...

R75ORCV10-R5-1455

Have a surf on the way home for your trouble.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1421

Mille Sabords is our final finisher.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1422

Stephane will be a little unhappy to see the string issues here.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1423

Hi team.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1424

Great shot with sun and contrast.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1425

WooHoo. My stern wave.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1426

Good to see smiles.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1427

Bet we won't see the strings out again.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1428

Simon O'Malley just wanted to show us why he is our 316 Man!!!

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1429

Oh, well, that is just sensational!

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1430

Pretty cool too.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-1432

And then it is time for Stephane and the gang of Mille Sabords to head home...

ThorsenORCV10-R5-1450

To Robin Hewitt in red and the officials of the day, thank you.
