ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

More than a few.

Not drinks. It is just that this batch of Steb Fisher's images had more than a few great examples that could have been the hero pic, but with the thumbnail so small, it really came down to the chosen one.

As you know, by now the weather had kicked in and so, the images show great contrast between the sun reflecting off white boats, sails and the dark, somewhat ominous skies... So. Following on from No wonder and Everybody, here are the next batch of keen finishers.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1260

See what we mean! Wicked pictured here, with Ninety Seven in the background.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1263

Plug, plug, plug. That'll keep them happy, Mark.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1265

Glorious stuff and it is Audacious in behind them.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1266

Chosen for the wave running up and back along the hull. Spirit of Freya in behind them in this one.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1268

Good hiking and more joining the rail party.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1269

That man Smithy in the afterguard, who Mark indicated got the shifts right all day. Well done lad. Black cans for you!

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1270

One of those rare times when Driver and Tactician would seem to be thinking the same thing...

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1274

Bit less squirt around when this was taken - perhaps they've just gone through.

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1283

He of the Loud Shorts in the afterguard and we're getting a wave from Mike Welsh.

B331ORCV10-R5-1276

Great contrast. Greg - would you mind if wee called the boat Lucy?

B331ORCV10-R5-1278

Where did that sun come from?

B331ORCV10-R5-1285

Focal plane correct, with the water sharp right up against the hull, sun on faces... Say. You've done this before!

B331ORCV10-R5-1287

That's some heel, with the square of the saildrive antifoul visible...

B331ORCV10-R5-1288

Greg on the wheel and the crew of...

B5903ORCV10-R5-1290

Spirit of Freya may have had to retire on the day, but it didn't stop Steb getting a few images of her as she went back to the bottom for the last time. The crew tell me they are very keen to redeem some of the points on their PHS standing in R5, the Passage Race this Sunday 15/08/10.

B5903ORCV10-R5-1291

The other board.

B5903ORCV10-R5-1292

Two slabs in already, as the day built (and built).

B5903ORCV10-R5-1293

By the time they got to the bottom and had to retire, the squirts were up to 40kn.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1294

Chutzpah38 here shakes off a wave and it is Clockwork in behind them. There are quite a few images in this sequence, but it goes a long way to showing how hard it was getting to make the line.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1295

So then the nose goes and finds another wave to have a go at. Stampede off to our left.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1296

Oh yeah. You're getting wet unless you're below. This was my first choice for hero pic... Guess you can tell why. When Steb sent it to me, having just read No wonder, he said "THIS is a bow wave." Ah. That would be yes...

R6418ORCV10-R5-1297

Lots of spray and mist and wet, wet-weather gear, so as to reflect the sun for our shots here.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1298

In we go - again.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1299

Getting closer to the line now.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1300

But first you have to deal with some more wind, spray, waves etc.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1301

I just bet this one is going to slide up the hull and hit the crew!

R6418ORCV10-R5-1302

Yep!

R6418ORCV10-R5-1303

Sure was.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1304

So, back in, which means...

R6418ORCV10-R5-1305

... you can come out again.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1306

Squirts would have to be in the thirties by now.

Chutzpah finished at 1304hrs and at that time, Fawkner was showing 25kn regularly and the squirts making just on 30kn.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1307

These are sequential, because Stampede's bow is now hidden.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1309

I like this. Hopefully, this Sunday you'll be around the course before anything significant arrives.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1310

Off to the graphics people for inclusion in the brochure. So that would be #2.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1312

Therefore, #3 is this one.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1313

Oooooooooooops. Should have looked on further - #4.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1314

Right. Five it is.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1315

But then what do you do about this one?

R6418ORCV10-R5-1316

And this?

R6418ORCV10-R5-1317

AND this one?

R6418ORCV10-R5-1318

Stern waves rule.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1319

Well this is definitely #6 and you can see why it got up for the prize.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1320

It's poorer cousin.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1321

Subaru eat your heart out. THIS is symmetry.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1322

Well this is just even better.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1323

So that'll be #7. Which one gets your vote, Bruce?

R6418ORCV10-R5-1324

After all that, you're allowed to go home.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1325

We'll show your name for posterity's sake.

R6418ORCV10-R5-1326

And do one last bow wave.

The very last round will be coming soon...

Cheery, happy, hopeful Brass for R5.

The Brass are certainly very happy with the changes to the wind forecasts from our friends at PredictWind. Simon says (and yes that was intentional), "Sunday's wind has moderated, so the bowman should stay drier, but if you look at the latest PredictWind weather chart, the CMC model does predict that the skies will open, between 6am and 9am. All told, if we miss the rain, it looks like at great sailing day. Now I look forward to seeing you all out there, hopefully, mostly dry!"

316.

It was back in Running with the Colts that we first saw the guy below - in shorts, no less!!!

Sm381ORCV10-R5-0699

Shorts! On that sort of a day. Wow. They do breed them tough aboard Mille Sabords.

Sm381ORCV10-R5-0700

And they are wet shorts, at that!!! Stephane, please let us know who STEEL MAN is? He must be made of solid 316 - certainly not TinTin!!!!

(TinTin is the cartoon that Mille Sabords comes from - see Voiles et Voiliers.)

Stephane Howarth, owner/driver of Mille Sabords (as pictured below), tells us that, "The 'Man of Steel' is Simon O'Malley..... he used to work in the mining industry, in extreme heat. He says he does not feel anything anymore!"

Well Simon, you are indeed the 316 Man!!!! Wow. Respect.

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G) - 11/09/10

Gods, wine and fun.

Dionysos was Zues and Semele's son and the God of wine (love him already). It's also a French Rock Band, which I didn't know.

However, our Dionysos is a Beneteau Oceanis 43, which is owned by Paul Commins and was launched in August 2008. "The boat will be crewed by family and friends. We participated in Geelong Week for the first time this year, and had a lot of fun. We loved the passage race to Geelong and as a result, we're looking forward to another sail down there. Competing in that race certainly was the catalyst to going in this event."

"The boat is moored at and races out of Sandringham Yacht Club (Sm434). We compete on a regular basis in the non-spinnaker races the club holds around the sticks. This is one of the first races in which we we will be competing in a spinnaker division. We are hoping to gain a lot of experience from the event."

Fantastic! Welcome to Paul, family and crew.

Lord knows I'm up for wine and a bit of fun...

DionysosLR

Dionysos is a Beneteau Oceanis 43 launched in August 2008. The boat will be crewed by family and friends. We participated in Geelong week for the forst time this year, and had a lot of fun. We are looking forward to another sail to Geelong.

Happy times for all aboard Dionysos, pictured here at the top of Port Phillip.

Right then. You may wish to join Paul and the crew of Dionysos. You may also not want to have to organise a massive crew or get too busy to have a whole lot of fun. Solution - join the Cruising with Spinnakers Division, even if you have been in the Racing Divisions previously. Pretty Woman was the first to cross over for this particular event and now 2009 Melbourne to Hobart Eastcoaster racer, Biddy Hu II, has shown up on the cruising roster, as well. Boats such as Ocean Safari, Vantage, Caledonia and Dream, could well do the same...

If you entered the entire MWS, then you're already automatically entered into this race too, but you do need to complete some more information for this particular race. You can also just enter the M2G race only, if you like, but I guess that means you're giving the game away about your favourite pastime after sailing - partying!!!

There are separate Cruising Divisions (kite and no kite) as well as a Cruising Series, which will incorporate the Passage Race (Race Five) of the MWS, which is on this Sunday, August 15 (MWS new SIs are HERE, which you'll need if you are doing the Cruising Series). The M2G Notice of Race is ready for your perusal already and the M2G Sailing Instructions are now live too.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry if you're already doing the MWS.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry for just the M2G race only and it looks like this, below:

M2G_OnlineEntry

If you' ve got the boat tied up to the quay and think you should give it a run, then do. The M2G is a passgae race and if you do not want to be in with all the racers, even if you normally are, then go in one of the Cruising Divisions. While you're at it, get your clubmates to come along as well. Why? Party. That's why...

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Everybody was keen to get home.

Well, I suppose it was cold and wet, so I think it is not only fair, but the smarter option.

B347ORCV10-R5-1182

Rogue Trader and you would think to yourself that there was nothing up at all...

B347ORCV10-R5-1183

Well, there's obviously a bit of wind around.

B347ORCV10-R5-1184

OK. And some building waves.

B347ORCV10-R5-1185

But really, it's all fairly pleasant. Isn't it?

B347ORCV10-R5-1186

'Steb'.

B347ORCV10-R5-1187

'Steb', again.

B347ORCV10-R5-1195

Well. Say nothing more.

B347ORCV10-R5-1196

My new favourite - the stern wave.

B347ORCV10-R5-1197

See. Phil Bedlington behind the wheel.

B347ORCV10-R5-1199

Classic stuff.

B347ORCV10-R5-1201

Ah huh.

B347ORCV10-R5-1202

Up you go.

B347ORCV10-R5-1203

Even further, too.

B347ORCV10-R5-1204

And then Yee Haa! You may remember this from way back when, just after racing had been completed.

B347ORCV10-R5-1205

Get into it.

B347ORCV10-R5-1206

The Birgee looks good there.

B347ORCV10-R5-1207

Certainly lots of that mist that the wind whips up around the scene here.

B347ORCV10-R5-1214

Over the line and head for home at RBYC. Escapade from HBYC finished just after them and continued on to their home, too...

H538ORCV10-R5-1189

Floss, floss, floss. Addiction did it just once, before they appeared with a freshly cleaned hull the next time...

H538ORCV10-R5-1208

Always lonely on your own...

H538ORCV10-R5-1211

That's a good image.

H538ORCV10-R5-1212

Strings and floss.

H538ORCV10_R5_1213a

And the cross from another perspective.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1217

This is Fade 2 Grey.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1218

Could be a rough ride...

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1221

And it is.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1223

That was fun - Do it again.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1224

Still some sun around.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1226

Great stuff.

Sm3107ORCV10-R5-1233

Off you go.

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1227

This is Challenge with a batten giving a bit of grief...

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1228

Wonderful stuff.

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1230

Classic.

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1231

Shake it off.

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1232

Crossing as the first of the forty-somethings.

S390ORCV10-R5-1235

Jazzy was right behind them.

S390ORCV10-R5-1237

And they dug in a bit too.

S390ORCV10-R5-1238

Man it was grey behind them.

S390ORCV10-R5-1239

Looking for the vector.

S390ORCV10-R5-1241

Wind around now...

S390ORCV10-R5-1243

Ready about.

S390ORCV10-R5-1245

Leo.

S390ORCV10-R5-1246

Through they go.

S390ORCV10-R5-1247

Love the clear patch of water on the starboard bow (Klingons).

S390ORCV10-R5-1248

Nice.

S390ORCV10-R5-1250

And then get in for the line.

S390ORCV10-R5-1251

Howdy team.

S390ORCV10-R5-1252

Well that stands up on its own.

S390ORCV10-R5-1257

Wave.

S390ORCV10-R5-1259

= Spray at some point.
