ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

The Love In.

You know, the fact that everyone is simply so happy to have got a race in on the weekend and enjoyed it immensely at that, is just really wonderful. The Committee is very much delighted with the outcome and thanks you all for your attendance in the cold. So, herewith, is some more of the love in.

Back in Hemingway, Robin Hewitt praised PYT for hanging in there and getting a result, despite 'going fishing for a while', as Dan Jeffery put it. Robin said of Dan and Trish's effort, "Full marks to them, as eventually the new West wind came in to give a magnificent finish." Out on Pretty Young Thing, they were possibly more concerned with how agonising a wait it would have been on the Committee Boat, but were very keen to "pass on our thanks to them for waiting so long!" Consider it done, Dan and Trish. Everyone is thrilled you persevered and think you'll do well in the M2G.

B441ORCV10-R5-908

Now, just how we could talk about love, without going to The Love Boat, themselves?

You're very much correct. We couldn't!

Below, they're in a procession with Young Ones in front and Alibi, just astern of them.

FleetORCV10-R5-826

Chris Furey, who classes himself as, 'possibly the oldest Bowman on the Bay', sent us these observations from the pointy end of Nutcracker.

"It was another excellent day's sailing on the Bay, Sunday - and on an interesting course for a change. I am no great fan of the endless windward-leeward racing we see these days." Here, Here. You all know of my love for the old Olympic Course...

"There was no real venom in the breeze, I think we saw high 20s a few times early on, but mostly it was around the high teens to low 20s. An ideal day for yacht racing. Close racing was once again the order of the day in Division Two. Well deserved line honours winner, Gienah, flew upwind and is always quick downwind (Ed. More than likely due to her RP lines!!!). Faster uphill than we have seen her before. We were undecided about whether we could count 10 or 11 on the rail. Any which way you look at it, it is a big crowd for a 36footer!"

"The Young 11, Young Ones, was really fast downwind on that first windy run, as expected and quick too up the long beat. She hung on when the breeze lightened off for a well sailed race. We should apologise to them for our helmsman’s momentary lapse of concentration on the first run, when we spun out in an unexpected broach and forced them to do the same, before they righted and shot past us. That was the only time I got my feet wet all day!!!"

"Beyond Outrageous got wound up on that hard run to Spoil Ground, where they rounded second or third, but then they struggled to find height uphill in the fresher stuff and so, slipped well back as the race progressed."

"Alibi made up a lot of ground upwind, because they listened to the weather Gods, who predicted the wind would go left. Accordingly, they went hard left up the long beat and made up heaps on a favourable shift, despite having just four souls on board. Billy Scott from Alibi told me later that they went that way to 'minimise the number of tacks for their aging crew'. Whatever the reason, Denis is always a cagey sailor and they earned another AMS win. Nutcracker has now had four consecutive 2nds on AMS and we are wondering what we have to do to win one?" Ed. 'The old handicap pondering problem'...

"We had our usual close tussle with INSX all around the track, but got a nice break on them after Gellibrand, climbing high in the shifty upwind stuff at the top end (of the Bay) to go from one boat length ahead to around 100m ahead at the 'weather' mark off Port Melbourne and then comfortably held them off downwind and up the final short beat to the finish."

"Fortunately, we were back in the SYC bar before any of the ominously predicted nasty weather showed up. Thanks to the Race Officers for a well constructed course, which made for the most enjoyable sailing. See you in a fortnight for yet another dose. Maybe it’ll be ever so slightly warmer then?" Ed. Hhhhmmmmm, to that.

S14ORCV10-R5-865

Gienah - Div2 Line Honours winner. She's a Seaquest (RP penned) 36, as too, is the very-new-to-the-Bay, Mistress. I'm looking forward to hot racing between them, as their crews get used to the boats...

So then, to Gienah, who as you see above, got the gun on Sunday. Stuart Addison is aboard Gienah and we asked what new features they had done to ensure their win and in doing so, got an idea of the counting issues that The Love Boat has just explained to us, above...

"It was great to have Gienah back on the racetrack, after a couple of weeks off. We've recruited well in the off season and we're starting to form a really solid crew.

  • On the bow we have the Zac. He's an Architect, who's recently moved down from BrisVegas and now questions his sanity half way through every winter race. Getting him over the line ahead of all of us, seemed to dull the pain for a little while...
  • Behind Zac is Monster (Marty). He's big, hairy, punctual to the point of frightening and at a lazy 6 foot 3 or 4, pretty inspiring to see on the end of a halyard.
  • Office is either Leah or Michelle, as Boys just can't do two things at once.... St Kilda Artist, Jaromir Krejcik, is backing them up.
  • Nathan Edwards has gone from the bow of Cadibarra (VII and VIII) to a long stint with the Finger and now trimming for us. He had a short layoff (Ed. not really - it was rather extended...), which included getting married, starting an engineering degree and a it seems, soon a family too. (We spotted Nate back on the water a while ago, which you can see all the way back in Book 'em Danno.)
  • Backing up in the trimming department, seems to be a roster of computer systems engineers in PK, Kim and Gav, who was recently deported to England, but he's madly applying for a visa to get back in time for the M2G. (think we know what he likes doing...)
  • John Rea is the man mountian on the main - gotta be one of the best story tellers afloat, after campaigns on Drakes Prayer, Voltaire and even the Foster's 18ft Skiff.
  • I'm mainly focussed on the tactics and keeping things running smoothly with the crew.
  • Signing the cheques, but thankfully not his name in the water, is Captain Rod Miller. He's both a four-striper aboard the good ship and in the air, as a long-haul pilot. Many years of high-end, J-Class racing overseas, makes him the amongst best helmers I've ever had the fortune to sail with." That certainly is some pedigree, Stu!!!!

"Being a forming crew, we were pretty unsure about the forecast, but looking at the models Saturday night, we were confident we'd have a great day afloat and as it turned out, it was. INSX, Nutcracker and Young Ones all had a cracking start and managed to round DMG ahead of us. It was there that we settled down to a good 5 miles of tweaking and Nathans awful jokes (Ed. and OMG are they or what!!!!!!). We seemed to find an extra gear a third of the way in to it all and rounded P3 very narrowly ahead of Young Ones, who were having a great race. That's how things stayed until the last run, where we split gybes with Young Ones, going to the Western side of the course and us to the East. Thankfully for us, a little extra tide and pressure helped us pull away a little, for a much anticipated whiff of gun smoke."

"It was really great to have a little success, as a reward for all the training and hard work we've put in. During our debrief afterwards, we felt there were a few things we could have done better. However, its very much a step in the right direction. Thanks to the ORCV for a great race again and we are certainly looking forward to a fortnight's time, where we can do it all again." Oh yes you can and now you'll be watched even more closely!!!

Tablet time for the Naviguessers and mathematicians out there - here are Gienah's uphill and downhill tracks and polars...

Melbourne to Geelong (M2G) - 11/09/10

Double Digits.

Magic, Tresor and Vicsail Savoire Faire take us to double digits for the newest section of the iconic ORCV event, the M2G.

ArtsyFartsyMagic

This magic shot of Magic is from last year's M2G, where she was in one of the racing divisions. Phil Spry-Bailey has been an absolute stalwart of ORCV events and we thank all of Magic's crew for that.

We'll find out a little bit more about the other two in just a while, but if you're thinking about being part of the Cruising with Spinnakers Division for the M2G on September 11, don't.

As in, don't just think about it - do it!!!!!!

Right then. You may wish to join all the other vessels and not want to have to organise a massive crew or get too busy to have a whole lot of fun. Solution - join the Cruising with Spinnakers Division, even if you have been in the Racing Divisions previously. Pretty Woman was the first to cross over for this particular event and now 2009 Melbourne to Hobart Eastcoaster racer, Biddy Hu II, has shown up on the cruising roster and now Magic, as well. Boats such as Ocean Safari, Vantage, Caledonia and Dream, could well do the same...

If you entered the entire MWS, then you're already automatically entered into this race too, but you do need to complete some more information for this particular race. You can also just enter the M2G race only, if you like, but I guess that means you're giving the game away about your favourite pastime after sailing - partying!!!

There are separate Cruising Divisions (kite and no kite). The M2G Notice of Race is ready for your perusal and the M2G Sailing Instructions are now live too.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry if you're already doing the MWS.

Click HERE to go and complete your online entry for just the M2G race only and it looks like this, below:

M2G_OnlineEntry

If you' ve got the boat tied up to the quay and think you should give it a run, then do. The M2G is a passgae race and if you do not want to be in with all the racers, even if you normally are, then go in one of the Cruising Divisions. While you're at it, get your clubmates to come along as well. Why? Party. That's why...

Best On Ground.

I just heard from Tony Bull and the first of Steb's pics also just arrived in my inbox. That's the making of a story... So here it is.

Tony commented, "I think the race committee were BOG! They must have a hotline to the big fella, the way they seem to slot races in between fronts."

"We had a lot of crew missing due to Airlie Beach and a Buck's weekend. Plus we lost a couple of replacements on the morning, so we only had eight instead of the usual 12 souls onboard. Lucky the course had was long legs! We struggled with so little weight on the rail and couldn’t get away from Jazz Player (they had a blinder) and just watched Goldy pull away", he said.

"We got through OK, considering, but now it will be hard to haul back Wicked, who are 4.5 points ahead. Very important to have a good next race and then you never know? Perhaps a late dying breeze for the last passage race, which will favour the bigger boats? We need to tap into the RC’s hotline, or have a devout month...." Know what I'd do, Tony.

"The jacket was returned to our table at RYCV. Now that’s service. It was packed in spinnaker bag with the kite. Sewermans’s revenge????? Keep up good work."

B331ORCV10-R5-719

Wasn't Audacious' day either and so they now too have some work ahead of them... Good pic, though!

B441ORCV10-R5-908

PYT - last finisher, but what a cool effort and we trust the M2G brings them great fun, as well.

B3607ORCV10-R5-095

The crew of Mistress. Expect them to get faster and faster, as they learn the boat...

B5262ORCV10-R5-335

Pretty Woman is no stranger to these pages and we look forward to seeing them out again very soon for the M2G on 11/09/10.

FleetORCV10-R5-127

LtoR is Escapade, Hush, Slice of Heaven (Tony Weeks from RBYC) and then, Cloud IX.

FleetORCV10-R5-826

Young ones leads Nutcracker and Alibi.

S14ORCV10-R5-865

Div2 Line Honours winner.

S14ORCV10-R5-871

And then Gienah slides the whole crew past the Committee to thank them.

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Hemingway.

There's one thing he knows a bit about. Actually, there are a lot, but the one I'm referring to is weather. He, is our very own Robin Hewitt and these are his sage words at the end of our Race Five.

"The BoM verbal forecast again demonstrates that forecasts are general and one should study the local data. The wind predictions were actually very accurate, but again the weather in a yacht's visible locality can be different, in terms of strategy. Most of the bad weather was further South and we managed to get a race in, with excellent sailing conditions prevailing. Unfortunately, the later finishers suffered a drop in pressure and especially so for the last yacht, who sat in zero wind for some time, just a half mile from the finish. Full marks to him, as eventually the new West wind came in to give a magnificent finish." Here here...

"The tale is told, when the line honours yacht averaged some 10kts, while the last finisher averaged roughly just 4kts. The start was in breeze of some 20-23kts and then it dropped to a mere 4kts, somewhere about when Div1 finished. Heavy rain bands passed through, but generally avoided the fleet. In spite of a longer race, the S38's finished quite close, led by Challenge. A good days sailing!"

Sm2ORCV10-R5-1232

They are used to being the first of the Colts, let alone the 40somethings, to go past the Committee Boat....

Part of that group of 40somethings, which the aforementioned Challenge often leads, is Wicked. One of her owners, Mark Wlesh, had this to say, "Another magnificent day's racing for Race Five, despite the cold and sometimes wet conditions. Well done to the ORCV for the constant vigilance, in closely monitoring the weather conditions, which have changed considerably over the past 24-48 hours. This resulted in the correct decision being made to run today's race. It was also great to do a course with some long legs, as a bit of variety.”

“Out on Wicked, we had another great race today, with yet more close racing with Challenge and Chutzpah38 around the track. Minor crew work errors could cost dearly in this type of racing, so everyone on board was really on their game. With the ordinary and aforementioned changing forecast, we may have been a little too conservative again today, in going again with our ocean main. We did not want to make it another ‘CVD’ (Commercially Viable Day) for the sailmakers!!!  Pete Williams joined us today (he usually drives the TP52 Cougar II), to call the tactics and he did a sensational job. Our regular afterguard hero, Graeme Smith (he of the loud shorts), had better watch out! We also borrowed Stuey Schafer from Calm (Farr GenIV TP52) for uphill trimming. Our regular foredecky, Aaron, was away, so I made a comeback to ‘Adventure Land’ and thankfully, did not screw anything up! Just like riding a bike, hey??!! Overall, we are very happy with our result, but congratulations to Goldfinger and Jazz Player (Bakewell-White Z39) on their wins today.”

Sm4ORCV10-R5-1274

Wicked - we're just glad to have her out there. BTW, they did well when they had Alien, too. That man Smithy in the afterguard, there...

ORCV Melbourne Winter Series (MWS)

Black everywhere.

"But around us. We're bathed in sunshine as Pretty Young Thing, our last finisher (at around 1430hrs), crossed over the line", was what the Brass had to say of their day. "They had to contend with the wind dropping to zero, before it kicked back in from the West at about 10kn now. It really is black over the CBD, Moorabbin - everywhere."

PYT were the final finisher and part of our Cruising with Spinnaker Division, as everyone prepares for the M2G. The Division was won on the day by Biddy Hu II, who went to Hobart last year, where as Pretty Woman broke a heady halyard and retired, so better to do that on a day like today, than for the all-important M2G.

Below are the observations from Fawkner Beacon up to 1500hrs, so you can see that slide off to very mild as the Division Two and Cruising with Spinnaker boats went to the line.
